The Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research (WICPER)

Information

The founder of the Weeramantry International Centre for Peace, Education and Research (WICPER) is the lawyer Sri Lankabhinmanya Christopher Gregory Weeramantry. His vision:

„The philosophy views peace education as the most urgent need of the hour, if the world is to be saved from violence and war. Misunderstanding and cross cultural ignorance are among the most basic causes of war and an urgent program of peace education is the only means of averting the global catastrophe, which threatens to engulf us all if the present pattern of military confrontations continues.“

In His Excellency’s professional career, spanning nearly sixty years, and in an extensive body of published works including twenty books, hundreds of articles and several judgements, he has analysed in depth what are now the three pillars of the Centre: Intercultural Understanding, Peace Studies and International Law. Each of these is an indispensable instrument of peace. To this end, the Centre has launched a series of projects reaching audiences from school level to the level of professionals and academics both nationally and internationally. His vast corpus of work in this field provides the Centre with a research base.

„The Centre is a non-political, independent and non-sectarian organisation, free of influences of any kind and will be firmly based on foundations of scholarship and universal goodwill. The Centre hopes to encourage and promote research and dissemination of knowledge at all levels through the work of eminent scholars, jurists and academics in the spheres relevant to the activities of the Centre“, says Weeramantry.

The work of Judge Weeramantry and of the Centre has received high international recognition as for example by the award of the UNESCO PEACE EDUCATION PRIZE 2006 to Judge Weeramantry and his selection as a recipient of the RIGHT LIVELIHOOD AWARD (Alternative Nobel Prize) 2007. In both awards appreciative mention was made of the work of the Centre.
